Where is the Embla Rooftop Bar & Cinema
On the rooftop of a building neighbouring Embla, The Melbourne Theosophical Society. Look for the signs at the doors and head up to the rooftop via the lift and a flight of stairs. The address is 126 Russell St, Melbourne 3000.
Parking in the city sucks. But if you are driving there are some private carparks that are $10 flat rate after 4 pm on weekdays and anytime on weekends. They’re located at 180 Russell Street and 222 Russell St. If you’re planning on imbibing, we recommend taking public transport.
What Time Should I Get There / When Does The Film Start?
Rooftop cinema open from 7pm each night, pre-purchased tickets generally required. Movies begin just after sunset, currently around 8pm. Food and drinks available throughout.
Rooftop bar open for casual drinks and snacks from 5pm-7pm Mon-Thu & Sun and 3pm-7pm Fri-Sat. No booking required but feel free to call us on 0427 972 254 to check availability on the day.
How Much Is A Ticket?
Tickets are $24 + BF for adults and $18 + BF for concessions (seniors or health care card holders).
What Food/Drink Is Available?
Delicious food – full meals and snacks – plus drinks are available on the rooftop both prior to and during the films. Check out the food and drink here.
Can Under 18s' Attend?
The rooftop is a licensed venue. All attendees must be over 18 or accompanied by a parent/guardian if under 18. Many of the films are MA15+ and some are rated R (18+). Be sure to check the film’s rating prior to purchasing tickets for under 18s’.
What Are The Cinema Seating Arrangements?
Deck chairs are provided for cinema ticket holders. Seating is unallocated. If you are a group wanting to sit together please ensure you buy your tickets in one transaction.
Do I Need A Cinema Ticket To Be Up On The Rooftop?
Yes and no. Before 7pm, the rooftop will operate as a bar/restaurant and you don’t need a cinema ticket to attend. After 7pm the rooftop will operate as a cinema and priority will be given to cinema ticket holders from 7pm onwards. If we are under capacity, there are areas where you can stay on the rooftop to continue your evening with your friends (as long as you’re not too loud).
Can I Buy A Cinema Ticket When I’m On The Rooftop?
Yes, subject to availability (there is a maximum of 50 people per cinema session).
What Should I Bring? What Should I Wear?
You’ve all been outside before, perhaps less so during 2020, so depending on the weather bring sunnies, a hat etc. The temperature can drop during the evening so also bring something warm, do we really have to tell Melbournians this though?
If you do forget something there are sunnies, hats, and blankets available to purchase.
Keep an eye on the weather as the cinema will still operate in light rain, so bring a waterproof jacket if rain is forecast.
What If My Session Is Cancelled?
If a session is cancelled, we will let ticket holders know via email and will post an update on Embla socials. Sessions will still run in light/intermittent rain. Sessions will only be cancelled if the weather threatens the safety of patrons and staff.
All ticket holders for cancelled sessions will receive a voucher to re-book a future session. Future sessions are subject to availability.
What If It Rains?
We’ll go ahead with cinema sessions wherever possible, and this includes light/intermittent rain. Bring a waterproof jacket if rain is forecast.
Screenings will be cancelled only if the weather poses a safety threat to patrons and staff. If we do have to cancel a session, we will try to let you know as early as possible but may have to cancel at late notice in some circumstances.
Is there a COVID-Safe plan?
Yes. Be more concerned about potential sunburn.

Yes, you can.
What’s included in my cinema ticket?
Your cinema ticket gives you access to the rooftop for the movie and 1 x deck chair per ticket to watch the movie. Please note that no food/beverages are included in your cinema ticket (these can be purchased separately on the rooftop).
Are There Refunds If I Change My Mind or Can No Longer Attend?
There are no refunds. If a session is cancelled ticket holders for that session will receive a voucher to book a future session.
If you have symptoms of covid do not attend. We will refund your ticket but in some cases may request evidence of a subsequent covid test before processing this. We will refund tickets where travel restrictions mean you cannot attend but only with at least 7 days notice.

Can I BYO Alcohol?
The rooftop is a licensed premises so no BYO alcohol is allowed. Alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks are available from the rooftop bar.
Can I Smoke?
We will be serving food on the rooftop and smoking is not permitted.
Is There Wheelchair Access To The Rooftop Bar & Cinema
Due to the temporary nature of this event, the rooftop is not wheelchair accessible (you need to climb some stairs to access the rooftop).
